Cranberry Almond Oatmeal & An Embarrassing Confession
I did something kind of silly the other day. I can’t be the only one who’s ever done this before. Am I?
While flipping through a cooking magazine at my local large-chain bookstore, I found a recipe I really wanted to try. But I didn’t feel like buying the whole magazine. So, I scrounged through my purse and found an old business card for Parallel 33 and wrote down the ingredients and instructions in the empty space on the little card.
Anyway, now you get to benefit from my ridiculous actions of last week. I’ve made this delicious Cranberry Almond Oatmeal twice since then. I think it’s fast on its way to becoming a standard breakfast treat for those days when I have the luxury of time to prepare a slightly fancier morning meal than a Kashi bar on my way out the door. Even my oatmeal-hating husband devoured his bowl and said something nice about oatmeal. Wow!

Cranberry Almond Oatmeal
Serves 4
4 cups water
1/4 t salt
1-3/4 cup rolled oats
1/4 cup oat bran
1/2 cup chopped dried cranberries
4 T maple syrup
1/4 cup sliced almonds
1/4 t cinnamon
Boil the water in a small saucepan. Then add the salt, oats, oat bran, and cranberries. Lower heat and simmer for about 10-12 minutes. Add the rest of the ingredients and cook for 2 more minutes. Serve immediately.

I’ll eat almost anything with almonds in it–you sold me, you naughty, recipe-stealing girl, you!

I have been known to photograph recipes when I didn’t have access to a pen and paper. Not necessarily in a bookstore, as that would be illegal (heh), but still.

If your oatmeal-hating husband liked this one, then so can mine. Can’t get him to eat oatmeal, even if there’s nothing left in the house. And oh, I do the same with recipes that I find in books and magazines that I don’t want to buy. Another great resource: the local library.

Sounds yummy–I have some dried cherries that I might try instead of the cranberries.

Hi! I loooove oatmeal, and actually made myself some today! (and last week too, as you can see in the recent post in my blog)
Yours sound good, but I like my oatmeal with milk.
Oh, and I have done the same thing about copying a recipe from a magazine at a bookstore… oops!

That sounds fabulous! I love oatmeal/porridge although these spring mornings in New Zealand aren’t really cold enough to indulge. Still, I can always lay in a store of dried cranberries…just in case…
Oatmeal aside, I’ve tagged you for the 23/5 Meme. There’s more info here: http://www.bibliocook.com/archives/2005/10/235_meme.html

Hey, stealing other people’s recipes has a long and proud tradition. And I must confess that I’ve done my share of notetaking in store aisles and have even run into bookstores just to look up nearby restaurant addresses (pre-cellphone 411).
As a former bookseller, I can assure you that we are not the only ones. Cookbooks and travel books are very popular in this regard. I don’t necessarily think it’s a crime, unlike, say, stealing the book, which also happens quite frequently.
