Favorite Foodism of the Week
For San Diego Foodies
Recently, I was in need of ideas for late night dining… basically places that would seat us around 11pm. If you’re ever in the same boat, keep the following links in mind because I’ve already done the research for you. Late Night Dining in San Diego and San Diego After Midnight. In case you’re curious, it turned out that we didn’t need to quite so late, so we ended up munching at Claim Jumper.
I don’t know how active Yummy Diego is, but they claim to have 42,000 readers per week with new restaurant reviews every Tuesday. Anyone use this site?
For All Foodies
The polls are open for the 2005 Food Blog Awards. Be sure to vote by January 18th. I was surprised how many nominees are blogs with which I am totally unfamiliar. I’m excited to discover new reading material, as if I already didn’t have enough!
Alli from Something So Clever has launched an exciting new online magazine of sorts, devoted to the controversial domestic goddess herself, Martha Stewart. It’s called Good Things and I’ll definitely be keeping an eye on it.
Recipes on the Radar
Good for You Granola from Fallen Souffle.
San Francisco Chronicle’s Super Spinach Raita from the Paper Palate.
Roasted Sweet Potatoes with Spicy Feta-Olive Salad… an oldie but goodie from The Travelers Lunchbox.
Date Squares from the Domestic Goddess.
That’s all folks! Hope you had a great weekend!

I went to the Yummy site, and found that not ONE of the three restaurants where I dined in the spring were reviewed: Region, 910, and Voyage. So I wonder about it: Region’s hot, right? And surely no one could call either 910 or Voyage a hole-in-the-wall.
I don’t get it. And so I mistrust it. Plus, geez, could he have any more ads crammed on there?
(I wanted to like it!)

Beth - I used to check out Yummy-Diego once in a while, and then I noticed they “knew” all the Owners & Chefs they were reviewing, and were pretty Buddy-Buddy with them…sounded quite “strange”, so I stopped. We have enough advertising.

The guy that does Yummy Diego is a waiter at Pasquale’s in La Jolla so he must have a lot of connections in the restaurant industry. I know that he’s really passionate about food but the site is a little overwhelming and ad-crazy.

I looked at the food blog award voting page and opted not to vote for anything, having never heard of any them. It was only compounded by the fact that I’ve only heard of Accidental Hedonist in the context of giving out some award or other recognition.
I don’t mean to put down the spirit of a community, but when the whole thing strikes me as “Somebody said they were giving out an award, thus we’ll make a big deal about it”, I’m feeling about as excited when the local donut/chinese food place draws a business card out of a fishbowl to win free lunches for a week.
Perhaps I’d feel differently if I had any context in which to choose. There’s a few food-centric blogs I read, but when you haven’t heard of any of them, it’s hard to get excited about it.

One of my favorite late-night dining spots is Emerald. They’re open til midnight. After 9pm they have a special menu that has lower prices (and slightly smaller portions). They don’t serve dim sum at that time though. It’s a really good deal.

Yummy Diego is a joke. The guy works at Pasquale. He gives you a good review only to get a free meal. He doesnt know anything about wine and pretends that he knows…

Could NOT disagree more with Chris and Kirk regarding Yummy Diego. Nine Ten WAS reviewed on that site and the comments were insightful. Some readers are missing the point obviously of having a COMPREHENSIVE review that people can leaf thru, to check out any manner of course elements. Most reviews will only show you a pic of the main dishes. I surmise that Kirk and Chris might well WORK AT RESTAURANTS that received mediocre reviews on Yummy Diego!

The Owner of Yummy Diego has contributed restaurant critiques for the North County Edition San Diego Union Tribune, I would like to add. He wrote a very good piece about Teri Cafe (off 805 and Clairemont), still online at signonsandiego. Check it out! I have read many of his reviews and find them entertaining, constructive, and influential.
