Restaurant Quickies
It’s late, but I’ve been a negligent blogger this week, so here are three quick restaurant commentaries for you San Diegans to ponder or ignore:
- Extraordinary Desserts is extremely overrated in my opinion. I’ve only been there once… a few weeks ago. And it may have something to do with the fact that a close family member of ours trained as a pastry chef at Le Cordon Bleu in Paris and we are extremely spoiled by her gourmet sweets or it could just be that we chose something lame or that we weren’t in the mood because it was pouring rain and it was a hassle to get out that night… but anyway we were completely unimpressed and likely won’t be back. None of the pastry selections in the case called out our name and this is coming from someone who would gladly eat a chocolate-covered shoelace. And the cake we ordered was completely forgettable from bite one. Are we the only San Diegans who feel this way? Or are we the odd chocoholics out?
- I ate a leisurely lunch at Pasta Pronto in Del Mar today with my friend Staci who owns a boutique right across the way. Although I almost always eat vegetarian at restaurants, I felt in the mood for their Homemade Marinara with Turkey Meatballs. The sauce was poorly flavored and the meatballs were just alright. I’d have to try a few more dishes there to give it a more balanced food evaluation. Service was slow-ish, but the patio was nice and sunny. Prices are reasonable and the menu is diverse.
- Awhile back, I picked up a quick to-go lunch from a new place in my ‘hood called Cook’s Healthy Snacks. It’s at the corner of Scripps Poway Parkway and Pomerado Road. It intrigued me because it’s one of the few places I know of where you can pick up a quick, organic, all-natural lunch. The salad and chicken wrap we ordered were both of acceptable taste and quality. I noticed that their ingredients are almost all from Costco. So while I could easily (and probably more deliciously) make my own healthy lunch at home with the same ingredients, it’s good to know that there’s a convenient and fast place to get something healthy around here when I’m on the go and time is short. Cook’s appears to be a new business with caring owners and I wish them well in their endeavors.
P.S. Maybe Cook’s isn’t in business any longer? Their web site doesn’t appear to be working. Hhmmm… I’ll have to check next time I drive by.
